Why a quarter-inch gap?

Deer mice and house mice can compress their bodies through gaps as small as 6 millimetres (1/4 inch). Anything wider than that is a viable entry point. Rats need slightly larger gaps but chew through soft materials more aggressively.

Is bleach really enough?

Yes. A 1:10 household bleach solution (1.5 cups bleach in 1 gallon of water) inactivates hantavirus reliably. The reason wet-cleaning is essential is not bleach failing - it is preventing aerosol generation while you work.

Are rodenticides a good idea?

They are a last resort. Modern integrated pest management prioritises exclusion → sanitation → snap traps in that order. Rodenticides carry secondary-poisoning risks to wildlife and pets, and corpses inside walls become a long-term exposure source.
